Pygora Fiber for Sale

The beautiful, soft cloud of processed Pygora fiber is out of this world!  We offer three natural colors, or what we call flavors.  Since even my white Pygoras have a natural tendency to have a hint of caramel in their fleece, the white is more creamy in color than a bright white.  The fiber cloud can be directly spun on a spindle or spinning wheel, but usually is blended with wool or Alpaca or whatever suits your taste.  However, a more curly wool is advised for garments that drape, such as sweater bottoms and sleeves.  Pygora fiber needs more twist during spinning and can be spun into singles and plied with other animal fleece rather than  blended.  Pygora fiber is easily dyed with Kool-Aid, Easter eggs dye, cake frosting dye without bleeding, and will take all kinds of natural dyes found in the wild as well as the traditional acid dyes.  No matter, the color will stay in the fleece and not wash out unless you use a natural dye that is predisposed to fade in the sun.  Nevertheless, I prefer the natural beautiful colors of the fiber rather than dying.  My raw Pygora fleece is professionally processed through Zeilinger’s Wool in Michigan that has processed animal fleece since 1910.

Pygora is comparable to cashmere, therefore after spinning the fiber into yarn, you tie the skein as you usually do, soak it in tepid water to pseudo-set the twist , and then whack it against a counter top or an outdoor railing, and it will blossom out just like cashmere.  The average micron count is at cashmere level or a bit more.  The Pygora Breeders Association 2003 Fiber Study found the average Pygora fiber diameter to be 23 microns, a fiber less than 77% the diameter of the 100 microns of an average human hair.  A 2011 Fiber Study is now in the works to prove to spinners, potential Pygora farmers and the world’s textile industries that we have a viable and coveted commodity.

My soft downy fiber goes for $13 an ounce.  Please contact me at cenotesprings@yahoo.com if interested in purchasing some of this gorgeous fiber.  You’ll make some fantastic garments, shawls, blankets, booties, and craft projects from this amazing fiber.
